Commercial tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States and Nevada, despite nearly 60 years of work and progress in tobacco control. Each year almost 500,000 people will die in the U.S. from smoking or exposure to secondhand smoke, and more than 16 million will suffer from smoking-caused illnesses.1 In Nevada, 4,100 people will die each year due to smoking. Nearly 29% of cancer deaths are attributed to smoking1, which includes 90% of lung cancer cases.
This five-year plan provides a framework for the State of Nevada and its partners to implement a tobacco-free Nevada with unified goals and strategies. The plan addresses the use of cigarettes as well as smoking and vaping of other products such as the use of electronic devices and cannabis.
